Umbrellas at South Canyon

Umbrellas. After a wild day of white water in which my boat flipped and I participated in a very long swim through a class 7 rapid, I treasured this quiet moment on the boats. The rest of the group had wondered up South Canyon to check out the sights but I needed a moment of quiet to get my head on straight. After the big swim, my nerves were pretty shot and I felt the need to paint. I had about 20 minutes to myself and I quickly sketched and painted three of our boats. They sat quietly in the eddy, the rainbow umbrellas casting a little shade on the scorching hot day. As I painted the array of colors I felt myself being pieced back together. I felt the residual anxiety from the prior day fading away. This moment allowed me to completely change my mood. From that point onward I decided to be excited for the upcoming rapids rather than afraid. This change in headspace made all the difference for me in the coming days. I love looking back at this painting as the point where I turned things around for myself. Sadly, our own umbrella was lost in the flip, but the rest of the group was gracious enough to rotate umbrellas so we still had shade most days.
