I decided to paint a momma bear showing her cubs her favorite berry patch in the woods. The old ponderosa trees are huge and rich in color. If you find a large one with oranges, you can lean in and smell the vanilla scent emanating from the bark. I love to \"stop and smell the roses\" when I see a beautiful, big, old Ponderosa Tree. When these trees burn, they can have giant cavities which create spaces for creatures to live. I originally thought I would be painting a chipmunk on this tree, but it just begged for an owl and I obliged. Peaking from the dark hollow is a barn owl. Purple seems to be my trade color, so I couldn't help but add a hint of violet in her twinkling eyes. One of these Tuesday mornings, I was driving home and enjoying the vast high desert landscape flashing past my window. Up ahead a huge cloud was forming a thunderhead. With this in mind, I came home and began sketching horses and storms. I knew I wanted this painting to be located in Central Oregon and I landed on Fort Rock. Jeremiah and I visited Fort Rock last fall and I loved the way this massive cliff seems to pop out of nowhere in the middle of the desert plains. I brought all of these elements together with the spicy strike of lightning and created this wild piece. This sparked my idea for this painting and it was solidified when I visited the River Otters at our local High Desert Museum. This particular campsite was after a long windy day of rowing. We pulled up onto the beach and watched the storm clouds roll in. As the sun set, the canyon cast it's gigantic shadow on the opposite canyon wall. We set up camp and watched a thunderstorm roll in. The wild weather cooled the air, which was a relief from the blistering heat of the summer's day. This trip changed me fundamentally. I found parts of myself that were stronger than I ever expected and I found peace deep within me. These red and orange walls tower out of the middle of the dessert and create essential ecosystems for a multitude of species like the Golden Eagle. Whenever I hike down to the Crooked River, I love how dwarfed I feel next to these rock walls.
